How it works

Sixty seconds of work changes the problem. Twenty seconds can be attacked, and thirty can be pushed, but a minute has to be paced, because nobody holds a sprint for that long and the last fifteen seconds punish anyone who tried.

Thirty seconds of rest is half the work, which recovers enough to start the next round strong without letting your heart rate drop far. Across eight rounds that keeps you working near the top of a sustainable effort for twelve minutes.

It suits machines and simple loaded movements best. A rower, an assault bike, kettlebell swings or a loaded carry all let you hold a steady rate for a full minute. Anything you have to think about will drift as you tire.

Judge it by the last round. If round eight is close to round one, the pace was right. If it collapsed after round five, the first minute was a sprint, and the fix is to start slower rather than to add rest.

Questions

Why a full minute of work?
A minute is long enough that you cannot sprint it, so the effort has to be a pace rather than a burst. That makes it closer to how most sports and most conditioning tests actually feel.
How many rounds?
Eight is twelve minutes and a complete session. Ten or twelve rounds works on a bike or a rower, where the movement is easy to hold at a fixed rate.
Is this still high intensity?
Yes, but a different kind. The intensity is a pace you can only just hold for sixty seconds, not the maximum you can produce for twenty.
