How it works

Two minutes is where heavy compound work starts to recover properly. A hard set of five on a squat drains more than the legs, and at ninety seconds most people lose a rep on the next set purely to incomplete recovery.

That lost rep is the argument. The training effect of a heavy set comes from the load, and a shorter rest reduces the load you can handle, so cutting the rest quietly reduces the stimulus you came for.

Two minutes across five sets is ten minutes of standing around, which is why people cut it. Filling it with light work for an unrelated muscle is a reasonable answer. Filling it with anything hard is not.

For sets of three or fewer at a near maximal weight, two minutes is still short. Three to five is closer, and the heavier the set the more the rest matters.

Questions

Which lifts need two minutes?
Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press and rows at a weight that is genuinely hard for the reps prescribed.
Is two minutes wasted time?
No. The point of a heavy set is the weight on the bar, and cutting the rest cuts the weight. Resting less trains something you were not aiming at.
Can I do something else while I rest?
Light accessory work for an unrelated muscle is fine and saves time. Anything that raises your heart rate defeats the purpose.
