How it works

A minute is the rest for work that does not tax you systemically. A set of twelve curls leaves the biceps tired and the rest of you untouched, and sixty seconds returns most of what was lost.

It is also the rest that keeps a session moving. Accessory work is where sessions run long, and a minute is short enough to get through six sets of two exercises without the gym trip doubling in length.

Use it as the floor rather than the default. If the second set of an exercise is consistently three or four reps worse than the first, the minute is too short for that movement regardless of what it looks like on paper.

It is the wrong rest for anything heavy. A near maximal set of five will still be recovering at ninety seconds, and starting the next one early trains fatigue rather than strength.

Questions

What should I use a sixty second rest for?
Isolation work and sets above about ten reps. Curls, lateral raises, calf work and most accessory movements recover enough in a minute.
Is sixty seconds enough for squats?
No. A heavy compound set needs two to three minutes, and cutting it to one costs you reps on the next set for no benefit.
Does short rest build more muscle?
Not on its own. Shorter rest raises the effort per set but lowers the weight you can use, and the evidence does not favor it over longer rests for growth.
