Step-up

Step onto a box or bench under control. Single-leg strength with almost nothing to learn first.

The movement

  1. 01 Foot up, knee loaded

Whole foot on the box with the front knee bent to about a right angle.

  2. 02 Drive through the heel

Push the front heel down and let the back foot leave the floor.

  3. 03 Stand up

Stand tall on the box and drive the trailing knee up, with no push off the floor.

How to do it

Setup

  1. Stand facing a knee-height bench or sturdy box.
  2. Place one whole foot on top of it, heel included.

Execution

  1. Drive through the heel of the raised foot to lift yourself up until you stand tall on the box.
  2. Bring the trailing leg up with you, touching it down lightly or holding it in the air.
  3. Lower back down slowly on the same working leg.

Form cues

  • The top leg lifts you; give the bottom leg the smallest push you can.
  • Lower under control instead of dropping off the step.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing off the bottom leg to get up.
  • Using a box so high that your hips have to swing to reach the top.

Worth knowing

  • The surface must be completely stable and must not slip. Shove it hard before you trust it.

Notes

The step-up is climbing, loaded however you like. There is no complicated pattern to learn, which makes it the easiest way into single-leg strength, and the height of the box gives you a dial that runs from very gentle work to genuinely hard training.

The bottom leg is where the exercise gets cheated. Any step-up becomes easy if you push off the floor, so make the standing leg as lazy as you can and let the top leg do the lifting. Slowing the way down helps too. Three seconds of lowering roughly doubles what you get from each rep.

Knee height is the standard box. Lower is fine for higher reps and conditioning. Go higher only once your hips stay square and you are barely pushing off at the bottom.
