Wall sit

A squat position held against a wall. Quad endurance with no impact and no equipment beyond the wall.

The movement

  1. 01 Set

Back flat against the wall, feet out in front.

  2. 02 Hold

Slide down until thighs are parallel; knees above ankles.

How to do it

Setup

  1. Stand with your back flat against a wall and your feet about half a metre out from it.
  2. Set your feet hip-width apart with your whole foot on the floor.

Execution

  1. Slide down the wall until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  2. Keep your knees directly above your ankles, bent to 90°.
  3. Hold the position, breathing steadily, then slide back up.

Form cues

  • Press your lower back gently into the wall.
  • Keep your hands off your thighs.

Common mistakes

  • Sliding too low or staying too high, which loses the 90° angle.
  • Holding your breath instead of breathing through the burn.

Worth knowing

  • Burning quads are the point. Sharp pain at the kneecap is not, so raise the position or stop.

Notes

The wall sit is the simplest hard leg exercise there is. A fixed position, a clock, and quads that get progressively louder about it. Because nothing moves and nothing lands, it fits anywhere. Hotel rooms, circuit stations, or the end of a session when your legs are too tired for good reps but not too tired to hold a position.

Holding a position builds strength mostly at the angle you hold, which is why 90° matters here. That is the hardest and most useful part of a squat. Time is your progression. Start with whatever you can hold in a good position and add five to ten seconds at a time.

It also works as an honest test. A strict sixty-second wall sit with your thighs parallel and your back flat tells you something real about leg endurance, which a higher position and hands on the thighs quietly hide.
