How to do it

Setup

  1. Hold a kettlebell by the horns with both hands, palms up and thumbs wrapped around the handle.
  2. Press it overhead with your elbows pointing forward and up, close to your head, bell hanging above your hands.

Execution

  1. Lower the kettlebell behind your head by bending only your elbows.
  2. Go down until you feel a deep stretch along the back of your arms.
  3. Straighten back to arms overhead without letting your elbows flare.

Getting it right

Form cues

  • Keep your elbows narrow, about shoulder width apart.
  • Grip the horns tight through the whole set so the bell cannot shift.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows flaring wide, which turns it into an awkward press.
  • Gripping loosely, which lets the bell tip and swing behind your head.
  • Arching your lower back as you tire.
04

Worth knowing

  • Both hands stay locked on the horns for the entire set. A loose grip lets the bell swing toward your neck, so start with a weight you can hold tight for every rep.

Notes

The kettlebell version trains the same stretch as the dumbbell overhead extension. One weight goes overhead in both hands, your elbows fold, and your triceps lengthen under load at the bottom. What changes is the grip. A kettlebell hangs by its horns instead of sitting flat across your palms, so it swings the moment your hands loosen.

That swing is useful information. It punishes a loose grip immediately, long before the weight is heavy enough to hurt anything. Lock your thumbs around the handle and keep even pressure in both hands, and the bell stays still through the whole range.

Because the grip is the limiting factor, this rarely lets you use as much weight as the equivalent dumbbell. The stretch at the bottom is what trains the muscle, and a kettlebell you can hold securely does that as well as a heavier one you cannot control.
