How to do it

Setup

  1. Stand tall with the barbell resting across your upper back, gripping it outside your shoulders.
  2. Set your feet about shoulder-width apart.

Execution

  1. Press up onto the balls of your feet, rising as high as you can.
  2. Pause for a full second at the top of the movement.
  3. Lower your heels back down slowly and under control.

BreathingInhale as you lower, exhale as you press up.

Getting it right

Form cues

  • Press through your big toes to keep your ankles from rolling outward.
  • Hold the top position long enough to kill any momentum.
  • Keep your knees straight but not locked hard backwards.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing rapidly up and down, which uses the Achilles tendon rather than the muscle.
  • Dropping the weight quickly instead of resisting gravity.
  • Bending the knees to cheat the weight up.
04

Worth knowing

  • Perform these inside a power rack if you are using heavy weight, in case you lose your balance.

Notes

Calves are built for endurance and bounce, carrying you around all day and absorbing impacts. To force them to grow stronger, you have to take away the bounce and give them a heavy, slow load. The barbell calf raise is the easiest way to hold enough weight to challenge them once bodyweight and dumbbells are no longer enough.

The pause at the top is what makes the exercise work. Without it, the Achilles tendon acts like a rubber band, doing most of the lifting for you. A full one-second pause forces the calf muscles to bear the weight entirely on their own.

Balance is the limiting factor here. Because the barbell raises your center of gravity, staying upright on your toes can be difficult. Start with a light weight to learn the balance, and keep your core braced tightly throughout the set.
