Barbell overhead press

The standing press. Bar from your shoulders to straight arms overhead, with your whole body braced underneath it.

The movement

  1. 01 Rack

Bar on the front of the shoulders, elbows slightly forward.

  2. 02 Lockout

Bar over the crown of the head, ribs down, glutes tight.

How to do it

Setup

  1. Grip the bar just outside your shoulders so your forearms are vertical.
  2. Rest it on the front of your shoulders with your elbows slightly ahead of the bar.
  3. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, glutes squeezed and stomach tight.

Execution

  1. Press the bar up and slightly back, moving your face out of its way.
  2. Push your head through once the bar passes your forehead.
  3. Finish with the bar directly over your shoulders, hips and mid-foot.
  4. Lower it under control back to your shoulders.

BreathingTake a big breath before each rep and exhale once the bar is locked out.

Form cues

  • The bar goes straight up; move your head back out of its way.
  • Squeeze your glutes so the press does not turn into a lean back.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back, which borrows the chest and loads the lower back.
  • Pressing forward around your face in an arc.
  • Stopping short of fully straight arms overhead.

Worth knowing

  • Leave your ego out of this one: the overhead press adds weight more slowly than any other barbell lift, and forcing it costs you your form first and your shoulders second.

Notes

The standing barbell press is the oldest measure of upper-body strength. Before benches existed, asking how much someone could press meant this. Nothing about it has changed. There is a bar, the ground, and every muscle from your calves to your triceps working together to put weight over your head.

Its reputation for slow progress is accurate, and worth accepting early. The shoulders are a much smaller muscle group than the chest or the legs, so weight jumps that feel trivial on a squat are ambitious here. Small plates, an extra rep, and patience are the whole program.

What you get back is strength you can stand up in. Holding a bar overhead with your ribs down and your glutes tight is a plank that moves, and the trunk control it builds shows up under every other bar you touch.
