Dumbbell shoulder press
Pressing weights from your shoulders to overhead. The main builder of shoulder strength and size.
The movement
Rack
01 Rack
Weights at shoulder height, forearms vertical.
02 Lockout
Press to straight arms with the weights over the shoulders.
How to do it
Setup
- Stand tall, or sit on an upright bench, with a dumbbell at each shoulder.
- Turn your palms forward or slightly inward, with your forearms vertical.
- Squeeze your glutes and tighten your stomach so your body is a solid base.
Execution
- Press both weights overhead until your arms are straight and your upper arms are beside your ears.
- Let the weights drift slightly toward each other at the top.
- Lower them under control back to shoulder height.
BreathingInhale at your shoulders, exhale as you press.
Form cues
- Keep your ribs down and press up without arching backward.
- Bring your head forward between your arms at the top.
Common mistakes
- Leaning back, which turns the press into an incline chest press.
- Stopping at forehead height instead of finishing overhead.
- Letting one weight race ahead of the other.
Worth knowing
- Overhead work needs room in the shoulder. If reaching the top pinches, turn your palms inward and build the range up slowly.

Notes
Pressing something heavy over your head is the shoulder exercise, and everything else is an accessory to it. Dumbbells put that within reach of home training, and they let each arm travel its own natural path, which most shoulders find more comfortable than a fixed bar.
Standing up makes the trunk half the exercise. Once the weights pass your head, your body is balancing a load at the top of a tower, and your glutes and stomach are what keep the tower straight. If your lower back arches noticeably, the weight is more than your brace can hold. Sit down, go lighter, or both.
Standing spends more of your effort on staying stable. Sitting lets you put more weight on the shoulders. Both are useful, so pick based on what the session is for and alternate them over time.
