Dumbbell bench press
Pressing two separate weights from a bench. More range of motion and more balancing work than the barbell version.
The movement
Bottom
01 Bottom
Weights just outside the chest, elbows about 45°.
02 Lockout
Press to straight arms over the chest, not the face.
How to do it
Setup
- Sit on the bench with a dumbbell resting on each knee.
- Lie back and kick the weights up one at a time, using your knee to help each one to your shoulder.
- Plant your feet and squeeze your shoulder blades into the bench.
Execution
- Press both weights up over your chest until your arms are straight.
- Lower them under control until they reach the outside of your chest and you feel a stretch.
- Press up and slightly inward so the weights nearly touch at the top.
BreathingInhale as you lower, exhale as you press up.
Form cues
- Elbows about 45° from your torso, wrists stacked over your elbows.
- Both dumbbells follow the same path on every rep.
Common mistakes
- Letting the weights drift toward your face as you press.
- Cutting the bottom of the range short, which throws away the main advantage.
Worth knowing
- Getting the weights up and down is its own skill: kick them up one at a time, and at the end bring them to your chest and sit up with the momentum rather than dropping them from the top.

Notes
Dumbbells give up some load for three things a barbell cannot offer. You get a deeper stretch at the bottom, your hands are free to find the angle that suits your shoulders, and neither side can hide. A strong arm cannot quietly finish the weak arm’s reps.
For building muscle that trade is usually worth making. The extra range at the bottom is exactly where the chest is working hardest, and a deep controlled press tends to do more than a heavier one through half the distance.
Control is the skill to build here. Each weight wants to wander off on its own, and the muscles that stop it are part of what you are training. If the dumbbells are wobbling around, they are too heavy for today. Go lighter, go deeper, and press better.
