Dumbbell lateral raise

Light weights raised out to the sides. The direct way to train the side of the shoulder, which pressing misses.

The movement

  1. 01 Arms down

Slight bend in the elbows, weights at the sides.

  2. 02 Raise

Lift out to the sides to shoulder height, and no higher.

How to do it

Setup

  1. Stand tall with a light dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Bend your elbows slightly and keep exactly that bend throughout.

Execution

  1. Raise both arms out to the sides until they reach shoulder height.
  2. Lead with your elbows, with your little fingers tilted slightly upward.
  3. Lower on a slow, deliberate three-second count.

Form cues

  • Lead with your elbows and keep your little finger slightly high.
  • Stop at shoulder height, because above it your traps take over.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging your body to heave up heavier dumbbells.
  • Shrugging your shoulders toward your ears.
  • Dropping the weights instead of lowering them.

Worth knowing

  • This is a light exercise by design. When in doubt go lighter and stricter.

Notes

Every press trains the front of your shoulders, and almost nothing trains the sides. The lateral raise fills that gap. Because broad-looking shoulders are mostly the side portion, it earns a place in nearly every muscle-building program despite the tiny weights involved.

Those weights are small for a reason. The side of the shoulder lifts your arm on a long lever, so a 5 kg dumbbell at arm’s length is genuinely heavy for it. As soon as momentum gets involved, with your hips bouncing and your torso rocking, the muscle you are aiming at stops working. Strict reps with embarrassing weights beat loose reps with impressive ones by a wide margin.

Do them for high reps and keep them controlled, ten to fifteen per set, lowering as slowly as you lift. The burn arrives fast. That is the exercise doing its job, not something to swing your way through.
